Learning Japanese in the Seychelles

Seychelles population is a mixture of African, Malagasy and French strains.  While the official languages are French based Creole, English, and French, Creole is the most widely used.  Business is carried out in French and English.

It does not mean that there is no scope for learning other foreign languages in Seychelles.  In fact multiple modern languages are now being learnt in the archipelago and Japanese is one of the most prominent among the foreign languages favored by the people here.

Arabs had visited these islands way back in the 9th centuries. Later on the island was also visited by the Portuguese, French and English people in succession.  Till 1814 the islands were under French domination and the influence of French language was supreme.  British ownership on these islands was confirmed in 1814 and thereafter English made rapid strides.  Finally the island became British colony in 1903.  English thus became one of the three main languages used by the people on the island.

In the last few decades the archipelago experienced high growth of population.  Though the overall population of 82,000 in the archipelago and 70,000 in Mahe does not count to be much in comparison to the overpopulated Asian zone countries, yet the expansion was notable.  During the 1840s the population was a mere 4000 and it expanded to 44,000 in 1962.  Another 38,000 have been added over the last few decades alone.

There is no discrimination against the foreigners on this island.  Rather the government tries to improve the trade and commerce with foreigners using flexible and friendly legislation.  Naturally enough most of the leading economies of the world have grown up trade relationships with Seychelles.  Japan as one of the leading economies to day has good business relationship with Seychelles.  The proximity through the waterways have contributed to their close economic relationship.

Moreover a good number of tourists visiting these islands annually hail from Japan.  This resulted in growth of interest for learning Japanese among the people in Seychelles.  Consequentially many institutions both online and offline came up in Mahe teaching the language to aspirant people.  This has also helped indirectly but in a substantive way the move of government in the last decade to attract offshore financial services, and especially in the fields of banking and insurance.  Japan on the other hand happens to be among the world leaders in these two fields and this has brought up a Japanese learning spree in the archipelago.

As a visitor to this beautiful cluster of islands you may also have encounter with the people who love Japanese language and may even have business deals with Japanese visitors there.  Learning Japanese in Seychelles could turn out to be profitable proposition on both counts. It is also a wonderful place for a honeymoon or even a flitterwochen type ceremony.
